On September 15th, an official reception was held in Baku to commemorate Mexico’s National Independence Day, a historic celebration that marks the country’s independence from Spanish rule. Organized by the Embassy of Mexico in Azerbaijan, the event was a vibrant display of cultural exchange and diplomatic goodwill.

One of the highlights of the evening was the exquisite Mexican national costume meticulously crafted by the renowned Leyla Babazadeh Fashion School, which added a distinct touch of elegance to the celebration.

Leyla Babazadeh herself expressed her delight, saying, “It was a pleasure for me to be here and create such a special, amazing costume with my team for this event.”

The event commenced with a moving performance of the national anthems of both Azerbaijan and Mexico, delivered by students from the National Conservatory of Azerbaijan. This harmonious start set the stage for an evening filled with cultural enrichment and diplomatic goodwill.
Ambassador María Victoria Romero Caballero, Mexico’s envoy to Azerbaijan, extended a warm welcome to the esteemed guests and delivered an address that emphasized the growing ties between the two nations. She highlighted the development of political, interparliamentary, tourism, and sports relations between Azerbaijan and Mexico. Notably, she mentioned the III Meeting of the Mexico-Azerbaijan Political Consultations Mechanism, held in May of the same year at the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Ambassador Romero also expressed her satisfaction with the visit of the head of the Mexico-Azerbaijan inter parliamentary friendship group, along with deputies and senators, to Azerbaijan earlier in the year. She appreciated the initiative to organize the Non-Aligned Movement Summit and Ministerial Meeting, in which Mexico participated as an observer.

The ambassador touched upon Mexico’s participation in the international conference “Combating the Threat of Landmines – The Path to Sustainable Development” held in Azerbaijan. She highlighted the significant opportunities for tourism between the two countries and the establishment of a Spanish language club at the Mexican embassy, emphasizing cultural exchange.

Adding to the diplomatic chorus, Farid Gayibov, the Minister of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Azerbaijan, conveyed his warmest congratulations to the people of Mexico on behalf of the Azerbaijani government. Minister Gayibov recounted the friendly relations between the two nations, noting the historic opening of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Mexico in 2007 and the Mexican Embassy in Azerbaijan seven years later.

Minister Gayibov underscored the ongoing effective cooperation between Azerbaijan and Mexico at both bilateral and international levels. He particularly appreciated Mexico’s support for Azerbaijan’s just stance during the occupation of its territories and after their liberation. He also acknowledged Mexico’s participation in the VII International Conference of Ministers and Senior Officials Responsible for Physical Education and Sport (MINEPS VII) held in Baku.

The evening continued with a mesmerizing display of art and culture, bringing together officials, members of the Milli Majlis, the diplomatic community in Azerbaijan, the Mexican community, university representatives, and media professionals. However, the highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the enchanting Mexican national costume specially created by Leyla Babazadeh Fashion School. Worn by the girls who graced the event with their traditional dances, it added an extra layer of beauty and authenticity to the celebration.

In the heart of Baku, Azerbaijan, this cultural exchange illuminated the enduring friendship between Azerbaijan and Mexico, showcasing the power of diplomacy, art, and fashion to bridge continents and celebrate the rich tapestry of our world’s cultures. Leyla Babazadeh’s Fashion School’s contribution exemplified how creativity and tradition can come together to create something truly extraordinary, enhancing the Mexican Independence Day celebration in Azerbaijan.
