A search has resumed for a man missing since a boat capsized in the River Thames.

The man in his 60s had been travelling in a small rowing boat with three other people on a stretch of the river in Sunbury-on-Thames, Surrey, on Friday morning.

It was earlier reported that six people were on the boat, but Weybridge Rowing Club has said now said four people were on board.

A rowing coach was accompanying in a separate boat.

The club said all five entered the water and added in a statement: “We are thankful that three of the crew in the rowing craft, and the coach, have been treated at hospital, but distressingly one of our members is still unaccounted-for.

“The club is working closely with the emergency services, police, Environment Agency and other agencies to aid the search for the missing person and to investigate the events that took place yesterday.

“The club will be closed until further notice. We wish to thank all those who aided our crew, including bystanders, and are thankful for their continued efforts.

“We are deeply saddened by this accident and our thoughts and best wishes go out to the friends and families of those affected. We are actively supporting all those affected.”

Surrey Police said it was called to Sunbury Lock at around 8.50am on Friday to reports of a small boat capsizing.

Officers attended the scene along with South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) and Surrey Fire and Rescue.

Andy Jenkins, chief inspector for North Surrey, added: “This is a very distressing time for all involved and we continue to support our partners in the search for the missing man.

“Our inquiries to establish the exact circumstances of how the boat capsized remain under way but at this time we do not believe there to be any suspicious circumstances or third-party involvement.

“We will look to share any further updates with you as and when we have them.”
